That Expensive Month Again…

I’ll start off with a few pics of this week gone, on Wednesday a few of us had to help set up the science project equipment at Ace lake for the girls to do their lake sampling, a nice drive in and out and a few pics along the way. The pic of Josh ‘steam throwing’ came out pretty well, it’s basically just hot water in a flask that evaporates as soon as it hits the freezing air…

So as explained by the title, It’s that time of year when everything adds up for me, 2 x offspring birthdays, 1 x wife’s birthday, 1 x my birthday (I have to buy my own) – It’s usually tax payment time of year too once the end of year accounts have been finalised – It’s usually a good time to make sure that you are at work and earning!

So not only is there all of the above but it’s also Antarctic shopping time! Now that I’ve been confirmed as staying on for the forthcoming summer I can look forward to another ‘shipment’ of ‘things’ arriving from the mainland, this, as far as we’re concerned is Christmas…You can’t buy anything all year so you make sure you take full opportunity to get any new ‘toys’ you want sent down when the time comes.

For me it will of course be some more camera gear, photography is the one thing I never get bored of down here as there is so much material to spend your time shooting & improving on – I am however starting to look like a mobile Nikon sales rep which is getting a little concerning. I’ve finally taken the decision to go ‘full frame’ in the digital photography world which doesn’t just mean buying a new camera body but also replacing the lenses too as most of my DX cropped lenses are incompatible with my bigger FX full frame bodies – To give you an idea of what I’ve got down here with me:

The current kit consists of

The Black Pelicase (Not often used)

  • 1 x Nikon D70 (have had this for over ten years, still going strong)
  • 1 x Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED DX Lens
  • 1 x Nikkor AF-S 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED DX Lens
  • 1 x Sigma AF-S 100-300mm 1:4.5 old FX lens (form back in the day when I used film)

The Grey Pelicase (The one that goes everywhere)

  • 1 x Nikon D7000
  • 1 x Nikon D5100
  • 1 x Nikkor AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G DX Lens
  • 1 x Nikkor AF-S 12-24mm 1:4G ED DX Lens (My favourite to date)
  • 1 x Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6G ED DX Lens

There’s also a multitude of GoPro cameras and other nik naks that I keep in my kit, they all get lots of use depending on what I’m doing – You may also notice in the black case there is a ‘hamburger’ – This is actually a kitchen timer which simply revolves round 360 degrees over an hour (as timers do) – I’ve mounted a tripod mount on the bottom and a go pro mount on the top, this allows me to do 180 degree time lapse shots, for the sake of $2 – I thought it was worth it so I bought two 🙂

So what’s the new kit coming on the ship? Well I know that I’ve already got the following at home waiting to be shipped to Kingston which is:

  • 1 x Nikon D610 (Full Frame wahoo!)
  • 1 x Nikkor 50mm1:1.8D lens
  • 1 x Tamron 90mm macro Lens

And hopefully the following:

  • 1 x Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC

I’m not 100% on the last one yet as I know there’s very few of these in stock in Aus currently and the store said “yes we have one” but it’s not been shipped yet – Watch this spot for another ranty email if I get some excuses from them next week :0)

I mentioned that my favourite lens is the 12-24mm but that’s partially because you need to have a wide angle to capture the shear scale of where you are here, some of my favourite shots taken since I’ve been here with this lens are below (though I’ve thrown in two others with the other lenses too), it’s a great bit of kit and there’s been few times I’ve been out where it’s not been used, it’s the lens I always keep ready on my D7000 whist the 55 – 300mm always remains on the D5100 :

The new D610 will hopefully replace the D5100 as my ‘telephoto’ camera, I’ve been a bit disappointed with some of the telephoto shots I’ve taken this year, the focus has been slightly out and the shots aren’t as sharp as I’d like, the review I’ve read place the new Tamron and the D610 as an excellent partnership so I’d best be buying myself some new foam to fit them into a cosy spot in the black Pelicase together ..

Nothing spectacular happened this week, I’ve been getting stuck into doing a bit of work segmenting our network into two separate VLANs, This should all be done next week hopefully without two many issues to attend to – That’ll mean a good deal of planning time left to get everything in order for the Summer and more importantly the ‘Summerers’ as they’re known – It’s going to be a big shock to the system to go from twenty people to around a hundred overnight when the ship turns up, at least we’ll be better positioned to deal with it having managed the place for a year and got to understand the ins and outs of it all.

Anyway, enough for tonight, chat later 🙂

Cheers

Stu
